A MAN who mugged a 25-year-old woman in the centre of Boston was jailed for 12 months at Lincoln Crown Court.

Armantas Steina approached his victim in the town's Market Place in the early hours of the morning and appeared to befriend her.

But Phil Howes, prosecuting, said Steina suddenly grabbed the woman's handbag but she struggled with him and attempted to keep hold of her bag.

Steina ran off towards Boston Stump with the bag but was pursued by a police officer who saw what happened.

He was tracked by CCTV cameras into Wormgate and then into Fountain Lane where he ran straight into a police car and fell to the ground.

He was arrested and later admitted he acted under the influence of drink.

The victim was left shocked and had injuries to her back and ankle.

Steina, 21, of Firlands, Weybridge, Surrey, admitted robbery on February 27, 2010.

Judge Michael Heath told him: "If people commit street robberies where they snatch handbags then they go to prison."

David Eager, defending, said Steina has since shown remorse and has been open and honest with police.
