POLICE are urging residents in Lincolnshire to review their home security as the nights draw in.

There has been an increase in burglaries in the early evening and officers want residents to take some simple steps to try and prevent it.

As part of Operation Lighthouse, officers raise awareness on burglary crime prevention at this time of year as thieves tend to take advantage of the earlier hours of darkness.

Burglars identify properties where no one is home in the early evening by looking for ones that have no lights on.

Community Safety Inspector Phil Baker said there were a number of very simple tips for residents to reduce their chances of becoming a victim.

He said: "The main thing is making your house look and sound occupied in the early evening before you get home from work.

"The best way to do this is to buy some timer switches and set them to come on in rooms at the front and back of the house in the early evening. They're available from most DIY shops these days and they're pretty affordable.

"You could also leave a radio on to make it sound like there's someone at home. Burglars will be deterred by these things so it's well worth trying. The other main message is lock your doors and windows before you go out. It sounds simple, but you'd be staggered by the amount of crimes that are a direct result of this.

Call Lincolnshire Police with information on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

rick29, there's a big difference between lying in wait for someone and protecting your home or family. If you were to shoot someone, only the latter should save you from a prison sentence yourself.
