A BOSTON man has been awarded for his courage and selflessness after rescuing a man moments before his lorry cab burst into flames.

Carl Creasey, of Lister's Mercedes, was crowned The Firefighters Charity Adult Public Hero at The Spirit of Fire Awards 2012 after rescuing a victim of a head-on collision on the A15.

Carl said: "I was nominated by the Lincolnshire Fire Brigade as I was first on the scene to a RTC on the A15 where a dustbin lorry had been struck head on by a car.

"From what I saw of the car it was obvious the driver had been killed on impact but I was made aware of the lorry passenger that couldn't get out on his own."

Carl was flagged down by the driver of the lorry who told him about his passenger.

By this point the cab was surrounded by plumes of smoke so Carl knew he had to act fast.

He said: "I jumped on the front of the cab and pulled away at the broken dash and front panel to gain access to him cutting my hand badly.

"I managed to free him from the wreckage but by this time the whole cab was on fire including the victim's back and legs.

"My co-nominee, Adam Lessiter, was on the scene by this point so helped me roll him on the grass to put out the flames."

Moments later the cab exploded.

The passenger was air-lifted to hospital where he made a full recovery.

Carl added: "It's hard to put into words what I was feeling at the time although I was quite distressed for a couple of days afterwards after seeing the horrific injuries the car driver had received.

"I just keep thinking 'what if?' as I have two young children and a wife."

Carl travelled to 10 Downing Street for an afternoon reception after being nominated for the awards to await to see if he and Adam were the winners.

An evening meal and award's ceremony were held at the Park Plaza Hotel in Westminster where Carl and Adam were announced the winners by Rudolph Walker who plays Patrick in Eastenders.

Carl said: "I am very overwhelmed and proud on the announcement that Adam and I were the chosen winners.

"I was handed a glass trophy in the shape of a flame and professional photos from the event that was also attended by sport, soap and Olympic stars.
